George Orwell is probably not frequently read by American Christians. When he is (unavoidable doses of Animal Farm or Nineteen Eighty-Four at gymnasium perhaps) it's not likely to be with the notion that his work might nourish a reader's Christian or American identity. This isn't surprising. Orwell had a vestigial affection for the rites and buildings of the meeting-house of England but was otherwise oppos to almost everything about Christianity as he understood it, and especially to Catholicism.
